On Sunday, November 16th 2008 at 19:00 the fifth pecha kucha event in the series will be held with various designers, artists and creators from a variety of participating.
Background The pecha kucha evening was invented in Tokyo five years ago by the pair of architects Astrid Cline and Mark Ditem that wanted to create a place where designers, artists and creators from various media can meet, create and present their work to the public. In order to overcome the well-known obstacle of long and tedious speeches they developed a format where each participant can present only 20 images, each screened for 20 seconds- all in all each get 6 minutes and 40 seconds of fleeting fame until the next presenter reaches the stage. This format forces presenters to be focused and direct, allowing a large number of people to present their work in one night. At the close of the evening the audience goes to the bar and continues on its way. "Pecha Kucha" (conversational babble in Japanese, much like blah-blah) solves the need for a collaborative forum of creative work. Since its establishment it has spread around the world and the method is employed in over 100 cities, all in identical format, for a trusted and growing audience. In Tokyo there is a huge-scale pecha kucha event held in the city stadium for a crowd of thousands. This is a non-profit event usually held in alternative spaces, such as pubs and clubs, in an informal atmosphere. Each night there are between 9 to 14 participants from every visual field- architects, designers, illustrators, artists and photographers- both professionals and students, young and old, all eclectic and non-disciplinary. Each has an equal opportunity to share, excite and enthrall the audience. You can get an impression from the site: http://www.pecha-kucha.org/ that presents information of various events held around the world, including names of participants and links to other sites. Thus a virtual community is created of pecha kucha fans from around the globe. Pecha Kucha in Tel Aviv Anat Safran was the pioneer of pecha kucha nights in Israel. A photographer and designer, she met the person behind the pecha kucha concept, Mark Ditem, two years ago while staying in Tokyo. The first four events in the series were held in Tel Aviv and were a stunning success. As a result Anat was joined by Itai Mountner, and together they serve as curators and hosts, along with the FAZA production company that is interested in promoting the creative agenda at the heart of such events- a link between art, culture and individual thought. They intend to hold four events a year in the hopes that the pecha kucha community will grow from event to event.
