Abfall - The solo exhibition by Ezri Tarazi at Periscope Design Gallery opens on Thursday, October 30th 2008
About the exhibition: The exhibition 'Abfall' (derived from German and Yiddish meaning leftover, waste) features works of industry leftovers and byproducts, all of which are recyclable.
The entire process of making "Abfall" was a process of extremes: At first the point was to make the machine workink and at the end of the process the point was simply to clean up and complete the exercise. In the middle of the process there is a simple and quite standard product - a water pipe or profile. The ends of these are unplanned, they each have individual character, they exist "on the margins", and they are the subconscious of the industry. Large water pipes are transformed into huge vases and aluminium ingots into bowls. The forms are achieved by using heat and pressure to warp the pipes. This method is not possible in a regular workshop or studio. These forces shape the geometric cylinders or cubes into more "organic" or "natural" forms and textures that are more typical of tree trunks or bamboo pieces. The black color disguises the material in some way, much like gold is the default color for "design lovers". The morbid quality and the totality of the black is somehow a very comforting and convenient option. The black provides a unified and frozen language for all the objects. At first glance and without any foreknowledge of the work process involved the viewers may observe the objects objectively. They may judge their quality without having to know how they came to be and what they are made of. This inability to interpret the objects and categorize them immediately into a familiar vernacular poses the question regarding over-consumerism. This exhibition examines the quick alternatives of the global agenda turning from "greener" to "blacker". In this exhibition industrial byproducts are another pre-apocalyptic cultural option, one that draws our attention to the piles of waste building up in the back lots of industrial factories.
